Celebrating Caribbean American Heritage Month: Meet Ana Paniagua

August 6, 2026

In celebration of Caribbean American Heritage Month, we wanted to spotlight someone on the NewFed team. Meet Ana Paniagua, SVP Controller at NewFed Mortgage Corp, Georgia sports fanatic, lifelong tennis enthusiast, and driven optimist with roots in the Dominican Republic.

Q

Tell us how long you’ve been with NewFed Mortgage, what your role entails, and what you’d consider your expertise.

“I’ve been with NewFed for over a year and a half. I am the Controller, so I’m responsible for everything and anything accounting related. That includes high-level accounting, managerial and financial activities that are all within the company. It is imperative for us to maintain accurate and timely records of all of our transactions.

Fun fact – I did look it up just for this – in April of this year, we recorded over 4600 transactions in the accounting department. Obviously that plays an intricate part in managing the health of the company. So that’s what we do.”

Q

What does Caribbean American Heritage Month mean to you?

“I’m laughing because I honestly had no idea such thing existed. Therefore, I’m going to say I have never celebrated it and it doesn’t mean much to me. However, I’m everyday Caribbean American. So I’ve never thought about it like ‘oh, what do we do this month?’ You know? We celebrate as things come up!

I’ll give you an example. I know you’re going to ask about some of the Caribbean traditions. In the United States, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the 2nd Sunday of May. In Dominican Republic, we celebrate it on the last Sunday of the month of May. So we celebrate both! We’re not giving gifts on both, but we get together to celebrate. I’ll call my aunts in Dominican Republic or cousins on that last Sunday, and they call us on the second Sunday. It’s all just very intertwined.”

Q

What’s something specific to your heritage that you want to highlight and hope you can pass on to your family, friends, and community?

“I think we’re a very welcoming group of people, very open. And I think we could all be that way.

In particular, my family has always worked hard and we are overly optimistic. There’s always an opportunity in disguise, no matter how bad things are. So, if I had to share something from my family, that would be it. Continue to work hard and it’ll pay off eventually. Be optimistic about it. You have that opportunity to embrace even the hardships. Something will come from it.”

Q

Tell me a little bit about what brought you to the mortgage industry. How did you get your start?

“I used to work for a marketing company, and they had a few sister companies. One of them was a mortgage lender. There was this Controller who managed all of the companies and I ended up working my way to Assistant Controller.

Well when we parted ways when the bubble hit, I decided to go for my masters. She (the Controller) reached out to me and said ‘hey, come work for me as a contractor, flexible hours, do your masters.’ And that’s actually how I got into the mortgage industry in 2017. I worked for them as a contractor and when I graduated, I joined them full time. I was there until I came here to NewFed!”

Q

What made you move to NewFed?

“Growth, a great opportunity to grow and learn. You can’t beat that.”

Q

Do you see an opportunity for mortgage professionals to better serve, or better reach the Caribbean community?

“I think, at NewFed, we’re offering some good marketing tools to our loan officers. And I think we can use that to open ourselves up more to the Latin community. Maybe by using a catch phrase that feels inclusive. I’ll give you an example.

The Atlanta Braves have a HUGE fan base. They call it ‘Braves Country’ because it goes as far as Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, some of North Carolina and obviously Latin America and the Caribbean. They have this catchphrase ‘Home of the Bravos.’ They are including the Latin community, which is a huge fan base of theirs because baseball is huge for us. So I think we could all do a better job of finding ways to connect with communities like this. In the end we’re helping people build homes, own homes – it’s not just about mortgages. And it shouldn’t feel exclusive.”

Q

What do you enjoy most about your job?

“The people. I work with very talented and dedicated people who relate to one another very well. We are all working for the same goal. We’re striving to improve processes and enhance productivity. At the same time, we’re maintaining quality and accuracy in the work that we’re doing.

Plus, we have fun in the process! We like to joke, and we like to have fun. We spend time getting to know one another. This is basically my home away from home when you think about it – as many hours as we work. To be able to collaborate at the same level, and for them to bring out the best in you and you bring out the best in them when you’re spending 1/3 of your time with them, I think that’s important.”

Q

What’s your personal mantra and where did it come from?

“Ni un paso para atrás ni para coger impulso”

— which means “don’t take a step back, not even to push off.”

This means keep moving forward no matter what. It comes from my mom! She always says that no matter what happens, just keep moving forward. Just don’t even look back. Don’t take a step back. Just keep focused no matter how hard it gets.

Q

Tell us a bit about your life outside of work. What do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies or talents?

“I love to play tennis! I’ve been playing doubles for many years now and love it. I am trying to play singles to improve my doubles. I also play piano, and right now, I’m trying to learn how to play golf, and I need a lot of work.

I’m a huge Atlanta sports fan. I love the Georgia Bulldogs, so I did go to the Championship game in Indianapolis last year. That was amazing! I’m also a fan of the Braves (home of the Bravos), the Falcons, and the Hawks.

I love to sing and I love to dance! Especially to Latin music. I used to be in a folkloric dance group, and you’ll definitely catch me singing at my desk throughout the workday.”

Thanks for sitting down with us, Ana!

Employee Spotlight: Danielle Courtemanche

August 5, 2026

Danielle “Dani” Courtemanche, Loan Officer and Branch Manager of the Reading, Massachusetts office, was June’s Employee of the Month at NewFed Mortgage this year. We sat down with her to talk a bit about her journey in the mortgage industry, her success here at NewFed, and that one time she tried out for American Idol!

How She Got Here

Dani’s first gig in the housing industry was in Real Estate in 2013. Here, she started to learn about the mortgage side of the business and quickly realized that it was something she’d be interested in pursuing. Dani’s sister worked in mortgage at the time, and her company was looking to hire a loan opener. In 2017, Dani took the leap, applied for the position, and got the job that eventually grew into a processing role.

It didn’t take long for Dani to realize that her passion and skillset were better suited for a Sales role. Dani moved into an LOA position where she met Eric Portnoy, Team Lead. When Eric joined the NewFed team in 2018, Dani shortly followed, excitedly looking to advance her career with a familiar team.

Over the last five years, her growth has been notable, and she’s proven to be an invaluable team member.

What Keeps Dani Motivated

The industry fascinates her, and the experience of helping her clients is second to none – “like hitting one good golf ball,” in her words. As a people person, Dani finds it extremely rewarding to “vibe with borrowers” and she particularly loves working with first-time homebuyers so that she can be a financial literacy resource.

One of her favorite success stories to date:

A client was living in a small one-bedroom apartment with her daughter and several grandchildren. She had a messy financial situation including a previous foreclosure. Dani was able to work with her and in record time, this client was able to upgrade from that tight living situation to a multi-bedroom house with a pool!

“It was an incredible turnaround for such a deserving woman,” shared Dani.

“Dani goes the extra mile with her clients and gets a certain glow whenever she can help. She was meant for this.”

— Eric Portnoy, VP Regional Sales Manager

Dani Behind the Scenes

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

“This is tough. I’d say quirky, hilarious, and caring.”

What are your hobbies and/or talents?

“I love singing, and I’m actually really good at it! I also love knitting, gardening, and spending time with my kids.”

What’s the last book you read?

“I’ve been on a big Stephen King kick!”

What’s something we should know about you?

“I mentioned that I’m good at singing – I actually tried out for American Idol years ago. I always wanted to be a singer and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to audition. In another life…”

Employee Spotlight: Ryan Ivory

August 5, 2026

Ryan Ivory, Senior Loan Officer in our Charlotte, North Carolina office, is July’s Employee of the Month at NewFed Mortgage this year. We sat down with him to talk a bit about his transition from real estate to mortgage lending, his success here at NewFed, and some of the qualities that make him the perfect loan officer for homebuyers in his markets.

How He Got Here

Right out of college, Ryan got a job with a large Real Estate services company that owns and franchises several real estate brands and brokerages. He spent 8 years there working with broker owners and agents across the country advising on how to utilize the corporate brand to generate more business and opportunities. Hoping to travel a little bit less as he and his wife welcomed two children, Ryan decided to leverage his Realtor relationships and become a loan officer in 2020.

“It was a fun and crazy start. It was definitely a lot easier at 3% interest rates… but I’ve never really looked back. I thoroughly enjoy this,” shared Ryan.

After connecting well with Brian (CEO of NewFed Mortgage) and recognizing how valuable the culture at NewFed was, Ryan joined our team in June of last year.

“We have really great relationships with people here. My processors, my underwriters… they’re family. It’s a very collaborative environment here, where if I have a question or need help with something, there’s a plethora of people that I can reach out to. That’s really important to me.”

“For being so new to the industry, what Ryan has accomplished is commendable. His work ethic is top-of-the-line, and he totally deserves this recognition.”

— Patrick Wheeler, VP Regional Sales Manager

Ryan’s Favorite Success Story

A client was interested in buying a family member’s house but didn’t think he could afford the payment at the market’s high interest rate. Ryan was able to work with him and determine the best course of action. Utilizing a 3-2-1 buydown, the client was able to purchase the house at a much cheaper interest rate and close within 3 weeks.

“He was so happy with the way we structured it, saving him so much money in the short term. He even said, ‘I never thought I would be able to buy a house in this market. You made it make sense to me and my family and we’re very grateful.’ Those are the most important relationships to me,” added Ryan.

Ryan Behind the Scenes

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

I’m friendly, passionate, and – most importantly – competitive.

What’s your personal mantra, and where did it come from?

“I’ve never had a bad day.”

I think if you go into life with a positive attitude and remind yourself that life happens and you have to keep your chin up, you’ll be a much happier person. And I think that it will show through not only in your work but in your personal life too.

What are your hobbies, talents and aspirations?

I’m an avid golfer. I love being active whether it’s running, playing sports or hanging out with the kids. I’m also a tee-ball coach, so I’d like to think one of my talents is extensive patience. Aspirations – phew – I just want to be the best father and best husband that I can be. Second to that, I want to be a good loan officer, a good steward of the company and continue to grow my business.

What’s something we should know about you?

Most importantly, I’m a really good listener. And I think that relates well to the mortgage business. Listening is how you identify opportunities to help. It’s like doing a puzzle. Every client is going to be different, but your process will always remain the same. Listen to what they need and then find a way to help them.

I grew up in Philadelphia, so I am a die-hard Philadelphia sports fan. Eagles, Sixers, Flyers, Phillies. Some call us crazy, I call us passionate. Sports have always been important to me and have played a big part in where I am today. I played Division I Lacrosse in college and I think that really taught me how to prioritize and stay organized in life in general. It’s carried over well for me in the mortgage business because I’m able to stay on top of everything that’s going on and tend to all my client’s needs.

And I can’t miss the opportunity to talk about my family. My wife, Kelley, and I have a 5-year-old son named Oliver and a 3-year-old daughter named Emerson. They’re my ‘why’.

A bit about their heritage:

“As a person of Hispanic heritage, I am immensely proud of my cultural roots and the rich tapestry of traditions, values, and achievements that define our vibrant community. I’d like to shed light on the remarkable contributions of the Latino community in the United States, particularly emphasizing the significant roles they play as small business owners, veterans, teachers, and public servants. It brings me immense pride to share the story of my brother and sister who are dedicated small business owners within this vibrant community.

Latinos today continue to make substantial strides in various professions, displaying their unwavering dedication and diligence to uplift communities across the country. As entrepreneurs, they bring a unique blend of cultural heritage, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit, which enriches the socioeconomic fabric of our society. Small businesses owned by Latinos contribute significantly to local economies, creating job opportunities and fostering economic growth.

In my immediate family, my brother and sister stand as a testament to this endeavor. They have demonstrated exceptional business acumen and perseverance in establishing and managing their own small business. Through their hard work and determination, they have not only achieved success but have also become a source of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs within the Latino community.”

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

“A time for pride and gratitude. It is profoundly meaningful to me that our community is celebrated not just on a particular day, but throughout an entire month. This extended period of recognition allows for a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures, histories, and experiences that constitute the Hispanic community. It is a time to reflect on our shared heritage, celebrate our unique identities, and highlight the strength and resilience that unites us.”

It is essential for them to be well-informed and realistic about their financial capabilities to ensure a stable and successful future as homeowners. The most fundamental pieces of advice I can offer is to emphasize the importance of education and thorough research before committing to a home purchase. Knowledge is empowerment in the realm of real estate. Educate yourself about the housing market, mortgage options, interest rates, down payment requirements, closing costs, and all other aspects that pertain to buying a home. Being well-informed will enable you to make informed decisions and avoid potential pitfalls.”

What do you like most about your job?

“Assisting clients in securing a mortgage is not just about the transaction—it’s about understanding their aspirations and tailoring solutions that best suit their needs. Building trust and fostering strong relationships with our clients is paramount to me. Knowing that I’ve played a crucial role in simplifying this significant aspect of their lives and contributing to their overall well-being is truly gratifying.”

What brought you to the mortgage industry?

“My decision to pursue a career in mortgages may have been influenced by a combination of personal interests, financial considerations, and skills that aligned with the demands of the industry.”

Do you see an opportunity for mortgage professionals to better serve the Hispanic community?

“Yes, one impactful way to achieve this is by offering online mortgage application platforms in Spanish. By providing the application forms, information, and guidance in Spanish, we create a more inclusive and welcoming experience for Spanish-speaking clients. This will enable them to understand the mortgage process comprehensively, make informed decisions, and navigate the application process with confidence.

Moreover, this proactive step aligns with the principle of promoting diversity and inclusivity within the financial services sector. It not only facilitates effective communication but also showcases our commitment to meeting the unique needs of a multicultural clientele.”

What advice would you give to young Hispanic professionals who are looking to get into the Mortgage/Real Estate industry?

“In the mortgage and real estate sector, honesty and integrity are non-negotiable virtues. Upholding these principles will not only earn you the trust of your clients but also pave the way for a successful and fulfilling career. Always be transparent and forthright in your dealings, ensuring that your clients have a clear understanding of the processes and decisions involved. Honesty forms the foundation of strong and lasting relationships in this industry. To always remain true to your roots and heritage.”

What advice would you give to Hispanic first-time homebuyers?

“I encourage first-time Hispanic homebuyers to embrace the power of patience and persistence. The right home will present itself when the time is right. Avoid rushing into a decision based on external pressures or market trends. Take your time to find a home that aligns with your financial situation, lifestyle, and aspirations. And to remember that homeownership is a long-term commitment, and a thoughtful approach to affordability will ensure your financial stability in the years to come.”

What’s your personal mantra, and where did it come from?

“I do not possess personal beliefs or mantras, as I lack personal experiences or consciousness. However, I can provide you with a popular mantra that many people find inspiring and helpful: ‘live in the present moment.’ This mantra emphasizes the importance of focusing on the here and now, rather than dwelling on the past or worrying excessively about the future. It encourages mindfulness and the cultivation of a deeper sense of awareness and appreciation for the present. This mantra can be found in various spiritual and philosophical traditions, including Buddhism and mindfulness practices.”

What are some of your hobbies? What do you like to do for fun outside of work?

“I enjoy exercising a lot in the mornings. What makes my heart full of love is being with my kids and bringing them to the park or out for a walk.”

She convinced Christine to apply, she got the job, and the rest is history! She went on to be a closer and then a processor.

Christine has been with NewFed Mortgage for five years! She distinctly remembers her first day being the greatest.

“Brian had my name on the sign to welcome me,” she shared.

“It’s always the best feeling when our clients appreciate everything we do. Sometimes they drop by after their closing and personally thank us – that’s the best because you know you’ve made a lasting impression and a real difference for them,” added Christine.

“One thing I love about NewFed is that it’s not a big corporation, and we are not just a number here. I love how everyone knows each other and how down-to-earth everyone is. Everyone sticks together to maintain the same goal of being a successful company. And, of course, Brian is a great guy to work for!”

When asked what motivates her in this role, she said she’s incredibly organized!

“Organization keeps me on track and my files clean. In general, I really love helping other people become organized! I used to own a business called 1-2-3-Organize Me, where I would go to people’s houses and work with them to organize certain areas of their homes. Now I focus that talent on this!”

Employee Spotlight: Eric Portnoy

August 5, 2026

Eric Portnoy, VP Eastern Regional Sales Manager, based out of our Reading, MA branch, is December’s Employee Spotlight! Let’s get to know him.

Eric at Work

In 1997, Eric worked for the Massachusetts Highway Department and purchased two multi-family properties. When refinancing the second property, he noticed how much the mortgage broker was paid, and at that point, he decided to consider a new career.

“I’m dating myself here – old HUDs had mortgage brokers’ commissions listed on them,” joked Eric.

By coincidence, the very next week, Eric was told he was being moved to nights on a bridge job over the water in February.

“I kindly told the foreman he would never see me again. I’ll never forget his words. He said, ‘Nobody quits a state job. You will be back.’ For the first five years, I was a full-time mortgage originator. I sent the foreman a pic of my w-2 and would only write, ‘I told you so!'”

Eric considers himself lucky to have been taught the business by a small two-man broker shop.

“Don Cardelle and Scott Weiberg treated me like family, held my hand, and taught me the business. After ten years, we merged with Omega Mortgage. After another ten years and a few more mergers, Omega Mortgage became Sage Bank. Throughout this time, Brian, Jim Jr., and I would constantly speak, and I always told the D’Amico’s that when the time was right, I would join NewFed and bring my team if I felt it was the right fit. When Sage Bank decided to merge with Salem Five in 2018, I called Jim and Brian and joined NewFed, hoping to bring over my group. Within 60-90 days, we had 14 employees join NewFed from Sage. Christine Seremet and Nolis Espinal were the first two employees to join me and were essential in letting the others know how great of a company NewFed was and how special a person Brian is.”

When asked what Eric’s favorite success story is, he shared this:

“I come from Chelsea, Massachusetts. It’s a very urban city 5 minutes north of Boston. The city is less than 2 miles but has roughly 500,000 residents. If you are from Chelsea, you are part of a special fraternity that only people who grew up in the inner city understand. In fact, I force my 14-year-old daughter to have dinner with me in Chelsea as often as possible because I want her to experience life outside her bubble.”

“While at dinner, there was a booth of DPW workers, some I knew and some I didn’t, that said hello to me. When the server brought my bill over, she said the group of gentlemen paid our bill. When I went over to thank them, I introduced my daughter and two of the men said she should be proud that I’m her dad because I never forgot where I came from and that I help everyone I can. They said that if it weren’t for me coaching them through their credit issues, neither would have the homes they own today. When we got into the car, my daughter said, ‘Dad, you should feel proud!’ And I sure did.”

When asked what motivates him in this role, he shared:

“Until a few years ago, I was motivated by money. But at 50 years old, I understand more than ever that if you love what you do and the people you do it with, the money will follow.”

“I’m a problem solver and truly understand my staff’s needs. The most rewarding part of my job is helping work through issues that benefit both the company and the employees. When I first got to NewFed, Brian would always talk about the ‘NewFed Culture,’ I would always smirk, thinking to myself, ‘culture smulture – just don’t let my checks bounce!’ Today, after Brian’s accident and all the growth and changes, I hope to help keep the ‘NewFed Culture’ alive.”

“Eric is a true facilitator of people. He couldn’t be more deserving of this spotlight as we wrap up what most would consider a pretty crazy year. He has played an integral role in helping NewFed navigate the last year and a half of changes and growing pains. He couldn’t be more supportive of the team and Brian’s vision for this company.”

— Jim Janczy, NewFed Mortgage President

Behind the Scenes

I love to travel and spend as much time in the sun and in/on the water as possible. My true aspiration is to be a better me than I was yesterday. For those who know me best, I truly live one day at a time.

My word is my bond, and if I consider you a friend, you are my family!!

Embracing Diversity and Inclusion: NewFed Mortgage’s Commitment to a Better Housing Industry

August 5, 2026

At NewFed Mortgage, our journey has been defined by a shared commitment to people – the people on our team and the people in our communities. We’ve served, partnered with, and represented diverse communities for over two decades. Though we’ve always considered ourselves a diverse mortgage lender, we recognize that there is more work to be done to level the housing playing field.

The Challenge: Systemic Barriers to Homeownership

Housing is essential to people’s lives, impacting their well-being, financial stability, and opportunities. Yet, historically, access to housing has not been equally accessible for all demographics.

Minority groups, including Black, Hispanic, and other underrepresented communities, have faced systemic barriers to accessing financial education, fair lending opportunities, and homeownership. Studies have shown disparities in mortgage approval rates and access to affordable housing, highlighting the pressing need for a more inclusive approach within the industry.

A New Role: National Diversity Lending Manager

As we step into a new year, we’re intensifying our dedication to addressing this need by introducing a pivotal new role to our leadership team: a National Diversity Lending Manager. Rae Saldana, a long-time mortgage professional out of San Antonio, Texas, will fill this role, and we couldn’t be more excited about what she brings to the NewFed team.

Rae brings more than 40 years of mortgage experience and a collective 60 years of community involvement/diversity work. In those 60 years, she has closely worked with the Pan American League, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and NAHREP (the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals). Her support for minorities and drive to uplift those in her community are reflected in these years of steadfast service.

Pioneering Progress Through Diversity

Diversity isn’t merely a concept at NewFed Mortgage; it’s the cornerstone of our identity. We understand that to truly serve the communities we operate in, our workforce needs to reflect those in the communities. Rae Saldana will spearhead our expansion into new regions, ensuring that we not only grow but do so by identifying and addressing areas where minorities may face barriers to fair lending opportunities.

“When it comes to fair lending, it’s important to make sure that all individuals have access to credit without discriminatory practices. As a mortgage lender, we have to make sure that lending practices are fair for everyone regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender or socioeconomic status.”

— Rae Saldana, National Diversity Lending Manager

Numbers That Reflect Our Commitment

Our statistics speak volumes about our dedication to diversity and inclusion. More than 20% of our mortgage applications from the last two years stem from Hispanic buyers, while over 50% come from minorities. These figures underscore our ongoing efforts to engage and serve diverse populations, ensuring everyone has an equal chance at homeownership.

Diversity at the Core of Leadership

Leadership sets the tone for inclusivity, and at NewFed Mortgage, we take pride in our diverse leadership team. Our executive team is a testament to equality, split evenly between men and women, fostering an environment where everyone’s voice is heard and valued.

“With Rae’s guidance, adds NewFed President Jim Janczy, NewFed Mortgage will continue to grow as a diverse and inclusive lender that reflects the communities we serve. It’s our mission to provide accessible and personalized mortgage solutions that empower individuals and families to achieve their dream of homeownership. We couldn’t imagine a better fit for this role.”

— Jim Janczy, President, NewFed Mortgage

Embracing Diversity Across Our Workforce

Diversity isn’t confined to our leadership; it permeates throughout our entire organization. Nearly 50% of our staff proudly identify with a minority group, fostering a vibrant and inclusive workplace where different perspectives are encouraged and celebrated.

We understand that a diverse team brings a wealth of unique perspectives, enriching our company culture and enhancing our ability to understand and meet the diverse needs of our clients.

Focused on Expansion

“Getting involved with community organizations is one of the best ways to attract and recruit diverse candidates. That’s how I met Jim. He attended NAHREP’s national conference, and here I am today with NewFed. It’s one thing to talk about being a local, community-focused lender – it’s another thing entirely to be about it. The most successful recruitment strategies focus on genuine connection-building; more ‘tell me how you got started and what your goals are,’ less ‘join us and let’s get to work.'”

— Rae Saldana, National Diversity Lending Manager

“I agree. adds National VP of Business Development Patrick Wheeler.  When focused on community involvement and genuine relationship building, you find the best people to add to your team. And with the spring homebuying season right around the corner, there’s really no better time for mortgage professionals to consider a move. I’m looking forward to working with Rae.”

— Patrick Wheeler, National VP of Business Development

A Future Shaped by Inclusion

At NewFed Mortgage, diversity isn’t an initiative; it’s our ethos. We’re committed to nurturing an environment where every individual feels empowered and where our services resonate with the unique needs of every community we serve.

The introduction of the National Diversity Lending Manager is a testament to our pledge to break barriers and ensure fair opportunities for all.

As we embark on this journey into the future, we invite you to join us. Together, we’ll forge a path where every homebuyer feels empowered every step of the way, at every stage of their life.
